What does it mean to SORN a vehicle?

SORN stands for Statutory Off Road Notification.
Declaring a vehicle SORN to the DVLA means it's being taken off the road and no longer needs to be taxed or insured.

If you choose to SORN your vehicle it:

  • Can't be used on public roads.
  • Must be kept in a garage, on a drive or on private land.

There's no legal requirement to do so, but you might want to insure your vehicle so it's still covered while it's off the road. For example, depending on your chosen level of cover, it may be covered if it's stolen from your driveway.
You can find further information about, and how to apply for, a SORN at www.gov.uk/sorn-statutory-off-road-notification
